Lotus Tech explores luxury mobility tokenization

2026-07-28 12:06

Lotus Technology has signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Hong Kong-based Finloop Finance Technology Holding Limited and Singapore payment institution FOMO Pay to explore tokenized luxury-mobility assets and blockchain-based payment services.

The agreement places a premium electric-vehicle manufacturer alongside a real-world asset tokenization platform and a cross-border payments provider, but it does not establish a vehicle-purchase product or commit any party to launch one. The companies said commercial scope, technical design, regulatory responsibilities, and final terms remain subject to negotiation and definitive written agreements.

The proposed collaboration would examine digital-asset issuance, tokenization and distribution connected to luxury mobility, as well as compliant operating models for digital-asset payment services. Lotus Tech, Finloop and FOMO Pay also said they will consider ways to integrate their services into Web3 systems while developing possible tokenomics models.

For Lotus Tech, the project could create a route to test whether tokenized instruments and on-chain payment rails can support vehicle-related transactions without building a regulated digital-finance stack internally. Finloop would contribute its RWA infrastructure, while FOMO Pay would provide payments capabilities across several Asian and Middle Eastern markets.

Exploratory deal links vehicles, tokenization and payments

The memorandum centers on a practical but legally and operationally difficult question: how tokenized products could be issued, distributed and paid for within a luxury automotive ecosystem.

Tokenization refers to representing an asset or right on a blockchain. In the proposed partnership, that could potentially cover vehicle-related assets, payment claims, ownership-linked products, or other instruments tied to Lotus’s mobility business. The companies have not specified which assets would be tokenized, whether any tokens would convey ownership rights, or which public or private blockchain networks could be used.

That lack of detail is material. A token tied to a vehicle, a financing agreement, a revenue stream, or a customer reward program could each face very different licensing, disclosure, custody and consumer-protection requirements across the United Kingdom, European Union, China, Hong Kong and Singapore.

The companies framed compliance as part of the design process rather than a later addition. Their stated work includes developing operating models for digital-asset payments and pursuing compliance-based connections to the Web3 ecosystem. That approach reflects the constraints facing tokenized real-world assets: the underlying asset may be physical, but issuance, transfer, payment settlement and customer onboarding can all trigger financial-services rules.

Finloop and FOMO Pay bring different parts of the stack

Finloop describes itself as an AI-driven “Web5” wealth technology platform, combining Web2 and Web3 services. Based in Hong Kong, the company offers products including cash management, public and private funds, structured products, bonds, insurance and virtual assets.

The company said it operates the FinRWA Platform, or FRP, which it describes as a one-stop platform for RWA technology, issuance and distribution in Asia. Finloop said the platform has supported multiple tokenized-product issuance and distribution projects, though the announcement did not identify the products or provide transaction figures.

FOMO Pay would bring payment infrastructure rather than asset-issuance technology. Founded in 2015, the company said it is licensed in Singapore, Hong Kong and the Middle East, and operates a cross-border payments network spanning Southeast Asia, the Greater Bay Area and the Middle East and North Africa.

Its role could be particularly relevant if the partnership moves beyond token creation toward actual settlement. Tokenized assets have often been limited by fragmented distribution and the difficulty of connecting blockchain transactions to licensed payment systems, foreign-exchange conversion and conventional corporate treasury processes. FOMO Pay’s existing payments network could help address those operational links, subject to the regulatory permissions required in each jurisdiction.

Lotus tests a digital extension of luxury mobility

Lotus Technology, listed on Nasdaq under the ticker LOT, focuses on luxury lifestyle electric vehicles. The company said it operates across the UK, EU and China, with design and engineering rooted in the UK and research and development based in China.

The company said it has operated for 78 years and is focused on electrification and digitalization in next-generation automobility. The Finloop and FOMO Pay memorandum extends that digitalization strategy into financial infrastructure, where carmakers are increasingly interested in subscription services, connected-car commerce, financing and digital customer experiences.

The deal does not mean Lotus vehicles will imminently be purchasable with cryptocurrencies or through open blockchain ledgers. Any consumer-facing payment option would require agreements on settlement currency, anti-money-laundering controls, wallet and custody arrangements, refunds, tax treatment, foreign-exchange handling and customer support. Those details will determine whether the initiative becomes a usable payment service or remains an exploratory technology partnership.

RWA market gives the talks a larger backdrop

Interest in tokenized real-world assets has grown as financial firms and blockchain companies test digital versions of funds, bonds, credit products and other conventional instruments. CoinGecko said tokenized real-world assets reached a total value of $19.3 billion by the end of March 2026.

Most activity in the sector has focused on financial assets with established cash flows or legal structures, particularly tokenized U.S. Treasury products and private credit. Applying similar technology to luxury mobility would involve a less standardized asset category, where valuation, ownership records, maintenance, insurance and resale can vary by jurisdiction and vehicle.

That makes the partnership more credible as an effort to build payment and distribution infrastructure than as evidence of an immediate tokenized-car market. Its next test will be whether Lotus, Finloop and FOMO Pay can turn a high-level memorandum into a regulated product with defined assets, clear customer rights and functioning settlement channels.
