Former OpenAI researcher hedge fund sells positions

2026-07-31 07:22

Situational Awareness LP, the hedge fund led by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, transferred roughly $16 billion in publicly traded long and short positions to Citadel after a steep July loss exposed the risks of its highly leveraged AI-stock strategy. The sale, reported around July 30, followed an estimated 67% drawdown for the month and reduced the fund’s remaining assets to about $10 billion.

The transaction marks a sharp reversal for a firm that had grown to approximately $20 billion in assets in less than two years, helped by a reported 439% return in the first half of 2026. Situational Awareness had built concentrated positions across the AI infrastructure trade, spanning semiconductors, memory, cloud computing, power equipment and data-center operators, while betting against software and outsourcing businesses it believed could lose ground to AI.

Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan and Bank of America acted as prime brokers on the transfer to Citadel, according to reporting on the deal. Prime brokers provide financing and trading services to hedge funds, placing them at the center of deleveraging events when falling collateral values require clients to post more cash or reduce positions.

AI selloff hit both sides of the portfolio

The fund’s losses came as AI hardware and infrastructure shares fell sharply during July. Nebius Group, Sandisk, Micron and CoreWeave were each down more than 35% during the month, according to the supplied market data. Those declines struck positions that had been central to Situational Awareness’s public-equity portfolio.

The short book added pressure rather than providing a hedge. Adobe, one of the software companies reportedly targeted by the fund, rose during the same period, creating losses for a strategy designed to benefit when selected software names declined. A portfolio can withstand losses in one part of the book more easily when other positions offset them; simultaneous losses on longs and shorts leave fewer routes to stabilize a leveraged fund.

Sources cited leverage close to four times the fund’s capital. At that level, a 10% decline in the underlying portfolio can translate into a far larger hit to equity after borrowing is accounted for. Once losses erode the fund’s capital base, lenders may request additional collateral or require positions to be cut, turning a market selloff into a liquidity event.

On July 24, Aschenbrenner told clients in a mid-year letter that the fund had not avoided recent volatility, particularly in Asia. He also opened an additional funding window for Aug. 1. Prices in several holdings continued to fall in later sessions, reportedly by 30% or more, increasing the pressure to raise cash.

A rapid rise built on the AI infrastructure thesis

Aschenbrenner launched Situational Awareness LP in September 2024 after gaining attention for his lengthy self-published paper, “Situational Awareness: The Decade Ahead.” The approximately 165-page paper argued that AI progress would increasingly be constrained by access to large compute clusters, electricity, data-center capacity and related physical infrastructure.

That framework shaped the fund’s investment approach. Its public holdings included companies exposed to the buildout of AI computing capacity, with reported positions in CoreWeave, Bloom Energy and other firms tied to storage and compute. The portfolio treated the AI boom as an industrial expansion requiring chips, memory, power generation, cooling and data-center space, rather than solely a software story.

The strategy had delivered rapid gains while capital spending on AI infrastructure accelerated. July’s reversal showed the vulnerability of a concentrated portfolio when markets begin questioning how quickly infrastructure spending will translate into durable revenue and cash flow. Large technology companies have continued to commit substantial sums to computing equipment and data-center capacity, but a reassessment of those budgets can quickly affect suppliers across the chain.

The episode also places fresh attention on the distinction between a correct long-term technology thesis and the financing structure used to express it. Borrowed capital can increase returns during an extended rally, but it narrows the room available to wait through a drawdown. Public securities are repriced continuously, making that pressure immediate when lenders monitor collateral daily.

Private holdings offer a different structure

After the Citadel transaction, Situational Awareness was reported to retain private investments, including about $5 billion in equity in Anthropic. The fund is also said to be considering a move toward operating as a private investment firm.

Private holdings bring their own liquidity and valuation risks, but they are generally not marked by public market trading each day. That structure could give the firm more flexibility to hold companies through periods of public-market volatility, although it would also make exits less immediate and valuations less transparent than listed shares.

Aschenbrenner’s career has drawn attention well beyond finance. Born in 2001, he entered Columbia University at 15 and graduated first in his class with degrees in economics and math-statistics. He later worked at a philanthropic vehicle affiliated with FTX and joined OpenAI’s Superalignment team in 2023.

OpenAI dismissed him in April 2024 over an alleged information leak, which Aschenbrenner denied. Two months later, he published his AI infrastructure thesis and subsequently turned it into one of the largest and most aggressive public-market bets on the sector’s expansion.

The transfer of most of Situational Awareness’s listed book to Citadel leaves that thesis less exposed to daily margin pressure, while the remaining firm appears set to rely more heavily on private-company stakes such as Anthropic.
