Trust in crypto rarely arrives in a perfect form. It usually comes packaged as a compromise between transparency, convenience, regulation, and operational reality. That tradeoff is back in focus after Deribit said it will remove its public Proof of Reserves page following deeper integration with Coinbase custody, while continuing with regulatory audits.
On the surface, this may look like a straightforward operational update. In practice, it points to a broader shift in how crypto platforms want traders to think about trust.
For years, Proof of Reserves represented a distinctly crypto-native promise. Instead of simply believing that an exchange holds the assets it claims to hold, traders could look for evidence themselves. Reserve ratios, liability data, and cryptographic verification created a structure designed to reduce reliance on blind faith.
The role of Merkle trees in Proof of Reserves matters for exactly this reason. They give traders a way to move beyond published reserve figures and independently examine whether their account data forms part of the underlying snapshot.
When a major venue steps back from public reserve verification, the question is therefore not simply whether that venue remains safe. The more important question is what model of reassurance is replacing it.
From visible dashboards to delegated trust
The emerging answer increasingly points toward institutional custody, external audits, and regulatory reporting. This model should not automatically be treated as weaker. Third-party custodians can provide specialized security infrastructure, operational controls, asset segregation frameworks, and compliance systems designed to manage large pools of capital.
The difference lies in where verification takes place.
With publicly accessible Proof of Reserves, traders may be able to inspect reserve information and confirm their own inclusion in a snapshot. Under a more institutionally driven model, specialists, auditors, custodians, and regulators perform a larger share of those checks on the trader's behalf.
That changes the experience of transparency. The underlying system may still be subject to extensive oversight, but less of that oversight is necessarily visible or directly accessible to the individual trader.
These differences become clearer when looking at how different types of crypto storage work, since custody structure can shape security, asset control, and counterparty exposure long before market stress puts those systems to the test.
As institutional infrastructure expands, custody is becoming more than backend plumbing. It is increasingly part of how exchanges establish credibility.
Custody does not answer every reserve question
The growing role of institutional custody can make it tempting to treat a reputable custodian as a substitute for reserve transparency. The two mechanisms, however, address different parts of the trust equation.
Custody primarily concerns where assets are held, how they are controlled, and which safeguards surround them. Proof of Reserves focuses on whether an exchange can demonstrate sufficient corresponding assets relative to the user balances represented in its reserve data.
A recognized custodian can strengthen the first part of that structure without necessarily answering the second. Its reputation, regulatory status, and operational controls may provide reassurance, but they do not automatically show how exchange assets compare with user balances at a particular point in time.
The reverse is equally important. A reserve ratio above 100% does not by itself provide a complete picture of an exchange's financial position, custody practices, liquidity, or operational resilience. Proof of Reserves can provide useful evidence about asset coverage without functioning as a complete assessment of everything happening behind an exchange.
This is why neither model should be reduced to a simple badge of safety. The more useful question is what each mechanism actually demonstrates and which risks remain outside its scope.
What this shift says about the next market phase
Seen more broadly, this moment reflects crypto's deeper integration with traditional financial infrastructure. Licensed custodians, formal audits, regulatory reporting, and specialized compliance systems are becoming increasingly important as institutional capital moves further into digital assets.
This does not mean transparency is disappearing. It means the way transparency is delivered may become more selective, operational, and increasingly delegated to third parties.
In one direction, this could attract larger pools of capital. Institutional investors are already familiar with regulated custodians, established audit processes, and oversight frameworks that resemble those used across traditional finance. As crypto becomes embedded in those structures, familiar forms of institutional trust can make participation easier for organizations operating under strict compliance requirements.
In another direction, everyday traders could end up with less direct visibility if public verification tools become less common. A regulated custodian or external audit can provide meaningful assurance, but traders may no longer be able to interact with the underlying evidence in the same way.
This creates an important tension for the next phase of crypto adoption. Institutionalization can strengthen operational standards while simultaneously moving parts of the verification process further away from the individual.
The market may therefore become more professionally structured without necessarily becoming more directly transparent.
Audits add another layer of trust
Regulatory audits also play an important role in this changing structure, but they should not be treated as interchangeable with Proof of Reserves.
An audit relies on an independent party to examine information according to a defined scope, methodology, and reporting period. Its value depends on what was reviewed, when the examination occurred, and how much of the result is made available to the public.
Proof of Reserves provides a different signal. Public reserve ratios can show asset coverage at a particular snapshot, while cryptographic verification may allow individual traders to confirm that their account data formed part of the underlying liability structure.
Each approach can therefore provide information the other does not.
An audit may examine areas that a Merkle-based verification system cannot capture, while public Proof of Reserves can provide a level of direct visibility that periodic audits may not offer. Neither should automatically be interpreted as a complete guarantee of financial health.
This makes the details more important than the labels. Terms such as "audited," "regulated," "fully backed," and "Proof of Reserves" can all sound reassuring, but their value ultimately depends on what has actually been examined, what information is available, and what traders can independently check.
What traders should do with the signal
For traders, the takeaway is not that Proof of Reserves no longer matters. It may matter more precisely because the ways exchanges demonstrate trust are becoming less uniform.
Some venues may keep public reserve verification front and center. Others may lean more heavily on licensed custody, regulatory audits, and institutional reporting. Both approaches can contain strengths, and both can leave questions unanswered.
Instead of dividing exchanges into simple good and bad categories, traders can look at what kind of trust model a venue is asking them to accept. Can reserve information be independently checked, or does verification primarily come through third parties? Is the custody structure clearly explained? Does the exchange show how assets compare with user balances? How frequently is that information updated?
Stress conditions deserve attention as well. Reputation can provide reassurance while markets are stable, but sudden withdrawals, liquidity shocks, and extreme volatility put operational structures under much greater pressure. The systems that matter are ultimately the ones capable of functioning when traders need access to their assets most.
Separating a reserve claim from a custody arrangement, and an audit from an independently checkable proof, gives traders a clearer way to evaluate those systems. Trust then becomes less about accepting a broad promise and more about understanding the evidence supporting it.
When trust becomes infrastructure
Crypto has long claimed it could improve on traditional financial models by making important information easier to verify. That principle remains relevant even as the industry becomes more institutional.
Proof of Reserves, institutional custody, regulatory oversight, and external audits do not need to compete for a single role. A more mature trust framework can draw on several of them at once, combining professional oversight with information traders can independently examine.
The important shift is that direct verification may no longer be treated as a default expectation everywhere. Traders therefore need to pay closer attention to where reassurance comes from, who is responsible for providing it, and how much remains open to independent scrutiny.
The next era of crypto trust may look cleaner, more regulated, and more professionally packaged. It may also become less visible by default. In that environment, the more useful question is not simply who sounds safest, but who provides meaningful evidence, what that evidence actually proves, and how much of it traders can still check for themselves.
